If the system gets low the extended life coolant and air do not play well together. We really try to talk people out of the extended life stuff. Whenever we do a flush or other repairs that require complete coolant exchange we use the standard green stuff. Now 99% of our business is cars and I don't know how much applies to trucks but we see many problems with the Extended life coolants. Most OEMs currently do not readily make available 'raw' ELC coolants, there is a VERY good reason for this and you would be wise to follow their lead.ДЄgain, NEVER EVER use SCA ot DCA in any cooling system with ELCs. This was because at that time, no one knew what the cause of the gasket leaking was (head and rocker box), it was determined to be calsium and other minerals in the water.Дetroit also has VERY strict water quality requirements which basically limit you to mixing with distilled water only.Д¬AT for many years did not sell anything BUT pre-mixed ELC. Should you ever need to add tap water, well water, pond water you need to completely flush the system and start over to avoid serious problems.Д«ack in 1997 or early 1998 Cummins sent out a Warranty Bullitin to fleet shops advising that ANY engine showing up for warranty work would have the engine warranty VOIDED if it had ELC installed in the cooling system. If you choose to use ELC, you MUST add only pure ELC, pre-mixed ELC or distilled water to the system. You MUST NOT use any addatives like DCA or SCA (Diesel Coolant Addative / Supplimental Coolant Addative) with ELC type coolants as they will gell plugging the radiator and heater core. The problem comes in when the green coolant was mixed with tap water (or even well water) because they contain minerals like Calsium that react with the ELCs to cause BIG cooling system problems - like leaking headgaskets and water pumps.
